I‘m the first to admit that sometimes I can be as dumb as a box of broken hammers. Here I’ve been reading blogs for what seems like years, and only now — as an unpublished crime writer — has it occurred to me that it might be worthwhile to see if there are any cop blogs out there.
Reading them can tell you things about their lives that can be reworked into stories. Take Copscop, for example, over at Life Of A Cop In A Cop’s World. He has new responsibilities that require him to be on call 24-hours, except for vacations. He has an official car at all times. He also has a girlfriend, and because there may be times when he’ll have to go on a call, she may be along. But there are a few rules she has to follow:
I explained that if I were to get called someplace while off-duty she is more than welcome to tag along, but she must listen to whatever I say, things like “stay in the car” or “if I or any of the other officers pull our guns, duck” the normal safety tips.
Once he saw she was cool with that, he got more specific.
So figuring that this didn’t scare the living crap out of her, and noticing that we are spending a lot of our free time together I explained to her the other rules. I explained that if things were to turn ugly while we are out that she is to listen to whatever I tell her, and to always stay behind me. I also explained that she had to listen to me without question, if I tell her to run, get away and call the police; she is to do this unquestioningly. I explained as politely as I could that if I felt she would be safer away from me, then I am probably right, and I would feel better knowing that she is out of harm’s way.
Then he tells the story about the bank robbery.
