Lynnea hosts other events too. Coming up fast is her Winter Wonderland on Saturday, 14DEC24 from 10am to noon. We'll be there along with some other local authors. Bring the kids and decorate holiday cookies and drink hot chocolate.

I have become a hostage to my hostas.

They grow well for me and once established, they don't require constant care. The leaves are gorgeous and they've got flowers!

Do I see slug and critter damage? Yes, but I've found if I stand back 5 feet, I can't see the damage.

"The New Encyclopedia of Hostas" by Diana Grenfell and Michael Shadrack turned out to be a great book. It's got some valuable growing information for amateurs like me and extremely specialized information about where to site your blue hostas for best leaf color. Did you know there are 8,000 plus hosta varieties? Many of which are delicate and persnickity so I'm better off with supermarket varieties?

This book is comprehensive and when you're done reading, you'll give those ultra-fancy white hostas a pass in the future. They don't have enough chlorophyll to thrive on benign neglect like supermarket hostas.

You'll also learn that King Charles III grows hostas!

I've seen Arkansas Amsonia for years at Longwood Gardens.
It's a handsome plant in the spring and summer, all feathery leaves and little blue flowers.

But in the fall, when it turns gold, it's a stunner.

And, at last, I've bought some. Two little bare-root plants that I planted last week.

If they live, I'll post pix. It will take years for them to look like this but that's what gardening is: art in four dimensions.

John W. Aldridge (1922 - 2007) must know something about what he's talking about. He was a professor of English at the University of Michigan and directed the Hopwood Award which encourages creative writing.

Truthfully, the way to learn to write is by sitting down with a pad of paper and a pencil. It doesn't cost 50K. Teach yourself and let your voice come out. Don't let anyone sand you down into a blob.

You may not know John Oliver Killens (1916 - 1987).
He's an African-American author from Georgia.

He wrote a lot! He also, in 1954 in his debut novel "Youngblood" coined a phrase you do know: "kicking ass and taking names."

Mr. Killens isn't wrong about this quote either. We all need something greater than ourselves to believe in.

As time passed, after Sherlock's initial appearance, more and more writers began writing about him. We call it fanfiction today. Pastiches are fanfiction that are written in the style of Conan Doyle. Parodies are what the name says: making fun of Sherlock and the tropes surrounding him.

So much Sherlock fanfiction was written after 1900 that we had to break each decade in two!

Thus, this week's Sherlock Holmes casebook covers 1900 through 1904. Five years in all and it's Sherlock as you've never seen him before.

As with the other 223B Casebook series, each short story is annotated with explanations of all those pesky, forgotten cultural references. They're arranged in order of publication, with as much biographical information Bill could dredge up about the author and any illustrators. Each year begins with a short bio of Conan Doyle himself, setting the stage for the stories that appear.

What a great read! Caitlin Davies @7baysbroadstairs goes into great detail about yet another forgotten part of English history: that of female crooks. They knew what they were doing and they loved it.

"Queens of the Underworld: A Journey into the Lives of Female Crooks" is exactly that: English queens of crime from 1600 to date. I'm sure she only scraped the surface!

If you're interested in history or women's history, this is a must read. If you're a writer, don't skip this book. It's an eye-opening look into a way of life and thinking that most of us will never experience.

When you're done with "Queens", Caitlin's second book is about the other side of the law: "Private Inquiries: The Secret History of Female Sleuths."

It, like "Queens", is English-focused. You may safely assume every country has its own crime queens and private investigators, even if you've never heard of them. Their stories are waiting to be told!
